- The main tenet of Floortime is to follow a child’s lead, building a relationship with the child based on his/her interests. ABA tries to decrease undesirable stereotypical behaviors in a child with external motivators, such as a favorite toy/food. Children don’t need external motivators with Floortime because the interaction and relationship itself is fun and rewarding, because it is tailored to the child’s interests. As a result of this initial, positive relationship, children will then be motivated on their own to build future relationships with their peers and other adults in their lives. Both services can complement each other. Do not be concerned if your child already receives ABA, he/she can do both!
My child does not have autism, can floortime help him/her?
- Yes! Floortime is very helpful for children with a number of emotional/developmental delays. They are included, but are not limited to: autism, sensory integration difficulties, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and anxiety.
